Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I convert MKV to AVI?
Some older DVD players, standalone media players, Sony PS3, and older car entertainment systems only support AVI format and cannot read MKV files.
What codec is used in the AVI output?
MPEG-4 (Xvid/DivX-compatible) by default, which provides the widest legacy hardware compatibility. H.264 in AVI is available for better quality.
Are subtitles preserved?
No. AVI has very limited subtitle support. Subtitle tracks from the MKV are not included in the output. If you need subtitles, use MKV to MP4 instead (MP4 supports embedded SRT subtitles).
Will the AVI file be larger than the MKV?
Yes. AVI containers are less efficient than MKV. The same video content typically results in a 10–30% larger AVI file.
Is the conversion done in the browser?
Yes. FFmpeg WebAssembly handles all processing locally. No file is uploaded.
